Melbourne has always been a very multicultural city. In the past 50 years it's population was built on post-WWII migrants from across Europe and as far back as Russia, China and the Middle East. Today over half of Melbourne's population is born overseas with the most common countries of birth being Vietnam, England, China和India. We now have more immigrants arriving in Australia every year than at any other time since the Great Migration following WWII - around 240,000 people annually. The result of these demographic changes are a number of distinct cultural neighborhoods, each with its own shops, eateries和community groups. Over 100 languages can be heard on our streets and our public spaces, from parks to train stations. No matter where you live in this great city, there will never be too far to go find some part of your country of origin or the countries you visited during your journey here.
In addition to the diversity of language we also see in our art and architecture, food and fashion. Multicultural celebrations also reflect the variety of cultures that call Melbourne home. Chinese New Year brings with it firecrackers and red lanterns; Australian Aboriginal Culture celebrates its Indigenous peoples with dance performances, art exhibitions and community gatherings. For those looking for a more traditional Australian experience, Easter Monday marks the end of spring with bonfires and barbecues. And then there’s La Di Da Day, celebrated by everyone irrespective of background, which is just an excuse to dress up, have fun and walk through the streets of Melbourne while dancing down King Street!
The arts are particularly influential in showcasing a diverse range of cultures, especially music. From classical to jazz and opera, to salsa, African drums and Bollywood, there really isn't anything you won't hear on our stages——we even offer free outdoor concerts in the park during summer - a great way to meet local people and enjoy good company, no matter what your background.
And if you want to take things up a notch, the city provides opportunities to learn new skills like cooking, language或dance. Whether you want to master how to roll sushi, try your hand at chopping chilli or brush
